Freedom of Information

At the City of Victoria we are committed to providing easy access to information and documents.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the Act) establishes a process to access records and information. The Act gives individuals rights to access information held by local government and protects their privacy by placing restrictions on local governments when collecting or disclosing personal information.

Routine Requests

Records such as agendas, minutes, bylaws, publications, policies and procedures and information related to your property are most often available upon verbal request. Please contact the appropriate department for access to these types of information.

Formal Requests

Although most of the City's information can be accessed through front line staff, a formal written request is required for access to some records. The Act requires the City to provide at least partial access to most records, with a few exceptions. For example, an applicant may not get access to someone else's personal information or information that would harm third party business interests, or information regarding bylaw enforcement matters.

The City of Victoria Freedom of Information Administration Bylaw provides for the City's administration of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and sets fees required to be paid under Section 75 of the Act.
