Ship Point Pop-Up Design Competition

 

 

Urban designers, industrial designers, architects, landscape architects, contemporary artists and creative types are invited to submit concepts for a temporary pop-up public space at Ship Point. 

The Prize: The winning team will receive a $5,000 award and up to $35,000 to design, build and install an irresistible place that pops! 

Submission Deadline:  Submissions must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2016.

Timelines: The winner will be announced on June 3 and installation will take place in July to be enjoyed during the summer and fall. The temporary installation will be removed in October.

Jury Details:  A panel of six qualified jurors will judge submissions based on the following criteria: social interaction and connection, aesthetics and originality, function and context, sustainability and feasibility. 

About Ship Point

Ship Point has been identified as one of 11 'special places’ along The David Foster Harbour Pathway.  Once complete, this pathway will be more than five kilometers in length and will extend from Ogden Point, along the waterfront and as far as Rock Bay.

The larger Ship Point area currently functions as one of Victoria’s larger outdoor performance venues and hosts a number of popular events and festivals throughout the year.  It is centrally located on the Inner Harbour, below Wharf Street. 

A long term plan for Ship Point will advance this year as we develop a Waterfront Plan.  This will build upon the work that has occurred in the past few years, recent and planned development in the area, and further engagement and planning work this year.  In the short term, this design competition is intended to add vibrancy and activity to the space for the public to enjoy this summer.

Q: What is the composition of the jury?
A: The jury will be made up of representatives from the following organizations: Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC), British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects (BCSLA), City of Victoria Art in Public Places Committee, City of Victoria's Director of Planning, Downtown Victoria Residents Association.

Q: Who will be responsible for moving and storing the installation for festivals?
A: The City of Victoria will be responsible for moving the installation for several festivals that will take place at Ship Point. The installation may be stored in the parking lot adjacent to Ship Point plaza, or off-site in a City-owned storage facility. The installation may also be incorporated into the festival site plan.

Q: What is the maximum height for buildings at the Ship Point site?
A: The Zoning Regulation Bylaw (IHSN Zone) indicates that buildings may not exceed the height of Wharf Street. The estimated difference in height between the Ship Point site (2.5m geodetic) and Wharf Street (9.0m geodetic) is approximately 6.50 metres.  Please note these heights are approximate and are intended to provide a general point of reference.

Q: What are the required safety precautions, given the proximity to water?
A:The site boundary provided in the Ship Point Site Plan (above) includes a 2.5 metre setback from the water’s edge and adjacent parking lot. This setback should be sufficient for passive site uses. If more active site uses are anticipated, teams should consider whether a wider setback zone is required to maintain safety.

Q: Has the design competition been reviewed by the Architectural Institute of British Columbia?
A: This design competition has been reviewed by the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC). They have determined it is not an 'architectural competition' under AIBC bylaw, meaning architects and associates are free to apply.
