Heritage Conservation Area
Heritage - Gonzales
In the early stages of engagement on the Fairfield and Gonzales Neighbourhood Plans, we heard a lot of feedback about the importance of preserving the historic character of the neighbourhoods. The idea of creating Heritage Conservation Areas was explored in certain areas of Gonzales that were identified by the community and a heritage assessment as having historic significance. While there was a high level of neighbourhood support for these initiatives, support from property owners in those areas was mixed. As a result, Council directed staff in July 2017 to make revisions and consult further. Based on additional feedback, staff recommended that Heritage Conservation Areas no longer be established through the Gonzales neighbourhood plan in December 2017. The neighbourhood plan identifies certain places as potential candidate areas, which could be be explored in the future if there is community leadership and interest.
The neighbourhood plans include other strategies for preservation of heritage.
