City United! Anniversary Celebration and Concert

City United! Anniversary Celebration and Concert

Monday, August 6, 2012, noon - 9 p.m.
St. Ann's Academy National Historic Site (noon - 6 p.m.)
Beacon Hill Park Cameron Bandshell (7 p.m. - 9 p.m.)

To celebrate the City of Victoria's 150th and the United Way of Greater Victoria's 75th anniversaries, the City of Victoria and the United Way teamed up to present the City United! Anniversary Celebration and Concert.

On BC Day, the community was invited to spend the afternoon on the grounds of historic St. Ann's Academy and enjoy interactive, creative excitement for the entire family, including a wide range of live music and entertainment, crafts, cooking and gardening demonstrations, and physical fun that celebrates the culture and values of our community. Juno award winners "Digging Roots" headlined a free concert at the Cameron Bandshell at 7 p.m. featuring their unique blend of blues, roots rock and hip hop, with special guests Jon and Roy and DJ Nigel Morrison.

Crafts, face painting, cooking demonstrations with the Island Chef's Collaborative, physical fun with Victoria Recreation and Sportball, a farmer's market, a song-making stage, art displays, chapel tours and the United Way's "Passport to Possibility" all helped celebrate the culture and values of our community in a fun, interactive, memorable and meaningful way.

An eclectic variety of food vendors, free bicycle valet parking, a plant potting station, and a mystery carnival attraction added to the wonders to be explored at this event.

At 6 p.m., the highly energetic, Eastern European brass band, Bučan Bučan, led a lively procession from St. Ann's Academy to the Cameron Bandshell in Beacon Hill Park for a free evening concert. The public was encouraged to bring blankets and a picnic to enjoy the opening festivities on stage at 6:30 p.m. Local musicians Jon and Roy opened the show at 7 p.m. with special guest DJ Neil Morrison.
