The Incorporation Cocktail
Veneto Tapa Lounge launched the Incorporation Cocktail to celebrate Victoria's 150th anniversary in style. Developed by Veneto's head bartender Simon Ogden, the Incorporation Cocktail was constructed and presented in the style of cocktails that were served in fine Victoria bars in 1862, the year of the City of Victoria's incorporation. The locally-distilled premium gin from Victoria Spirits drove the drink. Honey and ginger-spice of Tugwell Creek Solstice Mead and the juicy citrus tang of Victoria-made New Theatre Tonic concentrate were balanced with local organic lavender bitters. Top aromatics were supplied by a basil leaf from Ogden's garden.
TEST OF TIME: The Enduring Legacy of Victoria City Hall
On Thursday, August 2, the Victoria Civic Heritage Trust launched an exciting new publication, TEST OF TIME: The Enduring Legacy of Victoria City Hall. The launch was held at a lecture from 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at Victoria City Hall, followed by a book signing. Produced by the Victoria Civic Heritage Trust in honour of the City's 150th anniversary, this beautiful hard-cover book chronicles the contentious beginnings, decline and remarkable rebirth of this venerable structure, the first civic building in Western Canada, and designated as a national historic site. The commemorative book included the DVD, A Townscape Re-Discovered: Construction of Centennial Square, 1966, which tells the fascinating story of the building of Centennial Square. The book was available for $45 at the Public Service Centre counter at City Hall.
Victoria Tribute Blend by Silk Road Tea
In celebration of Victoria's 150th, Silk Road Tea created a limited edition tea: the Victoria Tribute Blend. The tea is available for purchase at Silk Road and is also available for tastings at Victoria 150 events throughout the summer.
In China, it was traditional to create "tribute" teas for the Emperor and the Imperial Court – a way for tea makers to pay homage. This was Silk Road's tribute tea to Victoria – a city and community which they are proud to be part of, and continues to inspire them. The tea leaves used for the Victoria Tribute Blend were grown in Victoria, BC – the first time that locally grown leaves have been used to produce tea. Inspired by Victoria's heritage, the blend is East meets West, and (including our British tradition, as well as our role as Canada's oldest Chinatown), and the nature that surrounds us with beautiful gardens and nature. The Victoria Tribute Blend was a black tea with beguiling honey, fruit and floral notes (that reminded us of the city's beautiful gardens, flowers and natural spaces).
In honour of both the Victoria Day long weekend and the 150th Anniversary of the City of Victoria, Spinnakers Brewpub released Hoptoria, a 6.5% abv IPA. Hoptoria is brewed with Canadian Superior Pale, English Munich and Cara malts and hopped with Columbus, Summit, Super Galena, Sterling and Cascade hops, then dry hopped with an additional half kilogram each of Cascade and Sterling, resulting in a remarkably smooth American Style IPA. Hoptoria was available on draught at Spinnakers, and was featured on cask and available in bottles.
