An independent and in-depth analysis and community feedback reviewed options to refurbish or replace the facility. Based on the business case, City Council voted unanimously to build a new recreation centre as the most cost-effective solution.  Please review the following three staff reports that outline the options considered for the new recreation facility and how the project is progressing to date:

Building a strong, connected community through
recreation and wellness

Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre is one of a kind. No other facility in the city offers the same access to affordable health, fitness, social and wellbeing programs. It is one of Victoria’s oldest and best used municipal recreation facilities, welcoming 400,000 visitors annually.

Keeping Fit and Healthy

Home to Victoria’s only 50 metre pool, the facility serves many of the city’s sports and leisure swimmers! And it’s more than just a pool, offering something for everyone from summer camps to leadership programs for youth, fitness classes, music and art programming to social activities for seniors.

Investing in Community Wellness

Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre has been part of the community for more than 45 years and now requires significant investment to meet current building, system and accessibility standards. The dryland spaces were converted for fitness and programming after the complex opened and are not well suited for their intended use. Accessibility into and throughout the facility needs to be updated and the change rooms require upgrades and expansion. In addition to the need for major infrastructure improvements required to keep the facility running, the recreational landscape has also changed resulting in the desire for different types of recreational spaces to meet community needs.

Everyone Welcome

Currently one in five people cannot access the facility. The new facility will replace the existing pool and provide opportunity for new health, wellness and social programs and services. As heard from the community, the 50-metre pool will be in the new facility and accessibility issues will be addressed so that patrons of all ages and abilities may participation barrier-free. The community also shared the need to ensure everyone is welcome through an accessible design and universal change rooms.
