Community Input - Open House #1

The following is a summary of the input we received from the community during the first Cook Street Playground open house in early 2012, when we asked how you would like to see Cook Street Playground improved.

  • 45% of survey respondents live within a five-minute walk
  • Input was received from all age groups except 13-19 year olds
  • Best parts of the playground as it is currently:
    • Location: close to Cook Street Village, other nearby play areas
    • Sunny, open grassy spaces with good views to play areas
    • Natural spaces
    • Two separate play areas for younger and older children
  • Least favourite parts of the playground as it is currently:
    • Worn out, old, boring equipment in poor repair
    • Awkward access, traffic on Nursery Road
    • Play areas for two age groups are too far apart
    • Poor seating areas for parents
  • Playground Theme:
    • 54% of survey respondents indicated they would like improvements to be based on a theme
    • Most often cited were natural or marine themes
    • Other suggestions were animals, First Nations history, Beacon Hill Park history, pirates, dinosaurs or fairies
    • Comments against having a theme were generally related to concerns with regards to costs, limiting children's imagination, and worries that it would feel contrived
  • Playground Features:
    • Most often cited playground equipment wants included:
      • ziplines
      • climbing features (either nets, rocks, walls or overhead climbers)
      • slides
      • swings
      • spinning
      • playhouse/social/imaginative
    • There was a strong desire to retain a sand play area
    • Low interest in interactive electronic equipment and activity panels
  • Landscape Features:
    • Open grassy areas, picnic area and natural landscape/native plantings were most commonly cited
    • Some interest in asphalt walkways and fitness equipment
  • Other suggestions included posts for setting up slacklines, skatepark, water feature, barbecue area, fencing playground

  • Keeping costs down
  • Desire to keep sightlines to street open
  • Considering how to make it inclusive to kids of all ages
