Douglas Street Priority Transit & Cycling Lanes

New priority lanes for transit buses and cyclists will open on Monday June 9, 2014.

Transit and cycling priority lanes will run from Fisgard Street to Hillside Avenue Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. southbound and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. northbound. Parking will be permitted along Douglas Street during off-peak hours.

A second phase of priority transit and cycling lanes is planned from Hillside Avenue to Tolmie Avenue and is expected to begin in early 2015.

The new priority lanes are designed to shorten travel times for transit customers, increase the reliability of public transit and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by limiting idling and lowering the number of vehicles on the road. The new lanes are seen as the first step to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of public transit in the region and into the downtown core.

The Douglas Street corridor currently supports as many as 1,700 vehicles per hour during peak travel times.
