The City of Victoria is accepting applications for citizens to serve on committees and boards to provide advice on a variety of important topics.

The deadline for the submission of all applications to City Hall is 4:30 p.m., Thursday, July 3, 2014.

Advisory Design Panel

To advise the Planning and Land Use Committee on the design merits of plans referred to the Panel as part of a:

  • Rezoning Application
  • Development PermitDevelopment Variance Permit Application
  • Statutory Building Scheme
  • Board of Variance application involving a house conversion
  • Special Projects referred to the Panel by the Standing Committee

Art in Public Places Committee

The Committee’s purposes are to:

  • Provide advice and act as a resource to City Council and staff on the City’s Art in Public Places Policy
  • Propose and support activities, initiatives and events that benefit and advance art in the City
  • Raise awareness and understanding of the importance of public art in the City
  • Advise on strategies, policies and programs to achieve excellence in art in the public realm

The Committee consists of five applicants from the public, appointed by Council, who must have experience and/or be trained in aspects of visual art. A minimum of two committee members must be visual artists. Other members should represent a variety of professions with expertise in public art, including the following:

  • Artists
  • Arts Administrators
  • Art Historians
  • Art Conservators and Curators
  • Architects
  • Landscape Architects
  • Design Professionals

Membership on the Committee will be limited to two terms of 18 months. The Committee will hold regular meetings (minimum of three per year).

Board of Variance

The Board of Variance is an autonomous body with authority to vary requirements of the Zoning Bylaw within prescribed statutory limits.  This authority is exclusive to the Board. 

The Board of Variance consists of five citizen representatives. Terms are for three years. There is no limit to the number of terms an individual may serve.

Applicants should have experience in adjudication, land use planning, law, or engineering.  Additionally, the following skills and abilities will be considered when City Council assesses the applicants.

  • Skill to read architectural plans and documents, and be able to mentally visualize the proposal being submitted for review.
  • Thorough understanding of the Zoning Bylaws of the City of Victoria.
  • Knowledge of the existing Community and area plans produced by the City of Victoria Planning Department, and approved by Victoria City Council.
  • Ability and time to attend twenty-two meetings a year at noon for a portion of the afternoon, and the occasional meetings for a large portion of the afternoon.
  • Ability and time to examine each site during the five days prior to the hearing on the afternoon of the Board meeting.

Heritage Advisory Panel

  • To advise the Planning and Land Use Committee on those heritage matters coming within the scope of the committee under the Local Government Act or that are referred to it by the Committee.
  • To make recommendations to the Planning and Land Use Committee respecting the designation of heritage buildings, structures and lands, and the preservation, alteration, renovation or demolition of heritage buildings, structures or lands.
  • To meet jointly with the Advisory Design Panel to review and provide recommendations to the Planning and Land Use Committee on development proposals referred to a joint meeting.

Applicants submitting applications are requested to include the following information in their application: name, address, postal code, home and/or business telephone number, occupation, history of community involvement, other relevant history, technical or special expertise and reasons for seeking an appointment.
