Construction at Wharf and Johnson: June 22-30

Starting tomorrow, the intersection of Johnson Street and Wharf Street will have construction activities taking place until June 30 2016.  With the new traffic island now in place, the old traffic island will be removed and the road will be reconstructed and then opened back up to the public.

In order for this work to take place, the right hand turn lane from Wharf Street onto Johnson Street will need to be closed. The closures will be during the day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. except for June 29, when an overnight closure of the right turn lane is necessary. People driving cars and riding bikes are encouraged to use either Fort Street or Fisgard Street as alternative routes. Signage will be in place to assist public with detours.

An outline of the works to be completed can be found here:

  • June 21: complete construction of new island, including electrical and crosswalk line painting
  • June 22 – 28: demolish old island and remove unneeded utilities
  • June 29: remove existing asphalt and re-grade the road surface (an overnight lane closure is necessary for this work to take place)
  • June 30: pave the road surface, paint the final road lines and re-open the lane to traffic
