Cutting Red Tape for Home-Based Businesses

The number of home-based businesses that can operate out of any residence has been increased to three from one under new regulations adopted by Victoria City Council to make it easier to do business in the city.

Under the amendments to the Zoning Regulation Bylaw, only one of the businesses can have customers that would visit and park at the residence. The bylaw has also been amended to prohibit home-based cannabis-related businesses.

In 2017 home-based businesses represented 40% of all inquiries at the Business Hub, the highest percentage of any category. Home-based businesses made up more than 16 per cent of all Business Licences issued by the City last year.

The Business Hub is located at City Hall and is a welcoming and collaborative first point of contact for business start-ups, relocations, expansions, investors, property owners, leasing agents, and others interested in creating prosperity in Victoria. The main goal of the Business Hub is to make it easier to do business in Victoria. Learn more about the Business Hub.
