Departments > Parks, Recreation and Culture > Culture > Victoria, a Cultural Capital of Canada (CCC) > Arts in the City Arts in the City Celebration
Arts in the City took place in February 2006 featuring a showcase of professional and community artists in Victoria for the month. In celebration of the City's 2005 Cultural Capital of Canada designation, it was designed to complement other related professional art organizations events taking place during the month. The program encompassed visual and media arts, music, theatre and dance. Performances and activities were held in a variety of venues and the majority of the events were free. The events highlighted both established arts companies and "hidden gems" including professional, emerging, community and alternative artist and performances. The program was representative of the City's arts and cultural community with activities that were diverse, varied, of high quality and accessible to the residents of the City. The Arts in the City program included over 50 events and performances, utilizing 24 different venues involving 395 local artists. An estimated audience of over 9,400 participated. The scope of activities over and above the Arts in the City events was extensive, which demonstrated the wealth of the City's arts community. 54 arts groups hosted other February events.
