Planned Park Upgrades for 2011Fisherman's Wharf ParkIn August 2009, City Council endorsed a management plan and park concept to guide significant improvements to Fisherman's Wharf Park. Input from two public open houses and consultation with the project's public advisory committee have helped inform the plan. The adoption of this plan concluded a nine-month planning process. The goal is to transform this park from an underused sports field to a "natural" park with a broader range of amenities that will create a destination park for residents. Park ConceptThe park concept recommends the introduction of a daylighted stream to promote biodiversity, extensive areas of natural plantings, a new playground, improved seating and a small plaza, new lighting and further development of Victoria's Harbour Pathway. The plan is being developed in two phases. A copy of the plan that was approved by Council is provided below.
Phase 1The first phase of the plan was completed in fall 2010 and primarily focused on the west side of the park, consisting of the following improvements:
Phase 2The second phase, which focuses on the eastern half of the park, will be developed as a rain gardento represent the daylighted stream originally proposed in the park's management plan. The rain garden approach is consistent with park planning goals and objectives outlined in the approved plan. The rain garden will help manage stormwater from a limited area surrounding the park in a more environmentally friendly way than conventional underground storm drains. On May 26, 2011, Victoria City Council approved Phase 2 of the Fisherman's Wharf Park concept proceeding to a detailed landscape plan. The new design features a rain garden, a beach area, a wall outlining the old harbour edge, a small community field and some seating areas. A copy of the concept plan is available below.
Next StepThe next step is to develop construction drawings for the rain garden concept, with construction starting in 2012. For more information, contact: Doug Demarzo |
