1. How are the leaves collected?
The City of Victoria has "pick up" crews and "vacuum" crews. "Pick up" crews pile the leaves with equipment such as blowers, tractors and backhoes, as well as rakes. This moves the leaves into a location that allows for easy pick-up. The "vacuum" crews use a large unit behind a truck that sucks up the leaves and blows them into a box on a truck. Bagged leaves will be placed in a truck.
2. Why pick up the leaves?
The amount of leaves we have would not be of benefit to the turf or shrubs if they were left on the ground. In fact, the turf would actually turn to mud if the leaves were not removed. We also keep the sidewalks, gutters and intersections clear of leaves to prevent flooding and trips and falls by pedestrians.
3. Where do all the leaves go?
The leaves and biodegradable bags are either composted by the Parks Division for use in display gardens throughout the city, or used by a contractor for composting.
4. Typically, when is the heaviest leaf drop?
Nothing is ever typical when dealing with nature. However, the second week in November is when we usually deal with the heaviest amount of leaves.
5. Can leaves be dropped off at the Parks Yard at 100 Cook Street?
No, we do not accept leaves at the Beacon Hill Park Maintenance Yard.
6. Where can I drop off my leaves?
Leaves and other yard waste can be dropped off for free, year-round at the City of Victoria Public Works Yard, 417 Garbally Road, on Saturdays from 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. Proof of residency in Victoria is required.
7. How can I contact you with questions, comments or concerns?
