Departments > Parks, Recreation and Culture > Parks Division > Boulevard Program > Edging

Each year, Parks staff spend part of the winter months edging turf areas throughout the City to maintain the width of Victoria’s sidewalks and to ensure curbs and gutters remain free of vegetation. City crews also ensure the access covers for underground services in the boulevards are kept clear of turf and can be easily located by those who need to service utilities underground. Edging also helps the line/curb painting crews with their work.

Edging is performed by a mechanical device that attaches to a mower, and was developed by the City’s mechanical shop. Typically, these mower units would be serviced and be waiting for turf cutting to begin, however with this attachment, equipment can be utilized for a longer period of time. All edging that is removed is recycled at the City’s organic recycling area in Beacon Hill Park.

Only “taxed boulevards” are edged and this service occurs every 3 – 4 years. Crews also edge traffic islands, medians, greenways, parks and parkettes. During February and March 2009, crews edged downtown areas, the taxed boulevards in Victoria West and along Dallas Road from Douglas to Erie Streets.

In 2010, edging is scheduled to occur along the taxed boulevards of James Bay and Burnside-Gorge neighbourhoods.
