The City of Victoria Parks system contains several important remnants of the once-widespread Garry Oak ecosystem, fragments of Cottonwood bog, Douglas Fir forest, Coastal Bluffs and riparian zones. To preserve this habitat, the City of Victoria has recently established the position of Parks Environmental Technician. The Technician's responsibility is to ensure the maintenance and enhancement of these areas. Steps that he will take to obtain these goals are:

Develop and implement plans for long-term care of natural park areas

  • Monitor the health of natural park areas and endangered species in the city
  • Promote awareness of conservation and environmental issues to municipal staff and the public
  • Develop and present educational programs for staff and the public
  • Work with community groups involved in invasive species removal, vegetation control, natural area management
  • Prepare grant proposals and work with groups to fundraise for support of natural areas
