10th Anniversary Public Works Day
"Revitalize, Reinvest, Renew"
Wednesday, May 20, 2009
9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Public Works Yard, 417 Garbally Road

This year, the City of Victoria celebrated its 10th anniversary of hosting Public Works Day, an open house to provide elementary students with an opportunity to learn more about public works. This year's theme was Revitalize, Reinvest, Renew. Close to 500 students in Grades 3 to 5 from 12 different schools attended with their teachers.

Held at Victoria's Public Works Yard, participants toured 18 interactive venues consisting of educational demonstrations and information displays, as well as enjoyed a barbecue lunch. The first group of students arrived at 9 a.m., with the last group departing at 1:30 p.m.

New this year, students had the opportunity to spin a wheel and win prizes by answering questions about what they have learned about Victoria's Public Works.

During the event, Mayor Fortin unveiled the first panel of a mural currently underway on a Public Works building by local artist Jeff Maltby. To be completed in August, Public Works Through the Years will depict the history of the City's Public Works contributions from the mid-1800's to present day. Maltby's other works include the historic murals in Chinatown and on the buildings adjacent to Public Works at Ellice Recycle.
