The City of Victoria is committed to a triple bottom line approach to decision making that considers economic, social, and ecological dynamics. An important element of this is taking a leadership role that investigates and implements innovative measures.

Climate Change

As a demonstration of its commitment to minimizing and reducing the impacts of climate change the City of Victoria signed the Provincial Climate Action Charter. The Charter commits the City to being carbon neutral in its operation by 2012, to measuring and reporting on community greenhouse gas emissions, and to working to create compact, more energy efficient communities.

Green Buildings

The City of Victoria has taken a leadership role through the development of a Civic Green Building Policy which requires all new construction of civic facilities to be LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver standard, with a goal of LEED® Gold.

The Burnside Gorge Community Centre was completed in 2007 and built to a LEED® Gold Standard. The City also created the framework for the award-winning Dockside Green Development to become the first LEED® platinum level community.

Currently the City is exploring a Green Building Policy for private development.
