The City of Victoria has traditionally maintained a supply of protocol gifts to be presented to delegations and foreign dignitaries. From time to time, this gift stock becomes depleted.
As a result, in 1997 the City decided to embark on a new program that would provide us with unique protocol gifts and enable us to update our corporate image – a critical factor in our ability to effectively promote the City within the world marketplace.
The City also wanted to use this program as a vehicle to bring more profile to the local arts community so we decided to issue an open call to local artists.
A City selection committee chose two original paintings, one by Dorset Norwich-Young and the other by Phyllis Serota. A third painting by Robert Amos, which the City already owned, was added to the program.
Each of these paintings reflects a unique “image” of Victoria, as seen through the artists’ eyes. These three original works will form the foundation of our new corporate gift program and will become a part of the City’s permanent art collection.
Five hundred limited edition prints from each of the three paintings have been reproduced, signed and numbered by the artists. Posters, cards and postcards have also been produced and are available for purchase at our Public Service Counter.
