The City of Victoria supports local food production through a variety of initiatives, including supporting urban agriculture, community gardens, and pesticide free landscapes. Victoria's approach to encouraging local food production includes the following items:
The City of Victoria's support of urban agriculture was formalized through the following Council resolution, adopted March 22, 2007:
- "BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Victoria supports in principle the concept of urban agriculture as a valuable community resource and will work to collaborate with the community, neighbouring municipalities and Capital Region District to support and encourage Urban Agriculture where possible."
- Council approved amending the zoning bylaw to allow urban agriculture as a home occupation on February 19, 2009. Details of the regulatory changes can be found in the attached Committee of the Whole Report.
- The City will build upon these initiatives through the review and update of the Official Community Plan, which will examine broader issues of food security and urban agriculture.
