The City of Victoria supports local food production through a variety of initiatives, including supporting urban agriculture, community gardens, and pesticide free landscapes. Victoria's approach to encouraging local food production includes the following items:

The City of Victoria's support of urban agriculture was formalized through the following Council resolution, adopted March 22, 2007:

"BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Victoria supports in principle the concept of urban agriculture as a valuable community resource and will work to collaborate with the community, neighbouring municipalities and Capital Region District to support and encourage Urban Agriculture where possible."
Council approved amending the zoning bylaw to allow urban agriculture as a home occupation on February 19, 2009. Details of the regulatory changes can be found in the attached Committee of the Whole Report.
The City will build upon these initiatives through the review and update of the Official Community Plan, which will examine broader issues of food security and urban agriculture.
