Official Notice
CITY OF VICTORIA - SNOW CLEARING
In the event of snowfall, property owners and residents are reminded that a City of Victoria By-law #92-84 requires you to clear snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of your premises. Please remember your elderly or handicapped neighbours who would appreciate your assistance with snow removal.
The City will make every effort to keep major arterial and collector streets open and to clear snow from as many downtown streets as possible, including sidewalks at intersections, parkades and bus stops.
The cooperation of all property owners and residents in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Hector Furtado, Manager - Streets Division
Operational Notes Regarding Ice and Snow Events:
In an event of icing up or snow accumulation, the Fire Hall usually will get the first call and they will relay it to the Emergency Response Person. The Roads Section will take the necessary steps to deal with the event. Priorities are assigned based on the Emergency Preparedness Program, with a priority set on Emergency Routes, Fire Routes, Bus Routes, then arterials, hills, residential streets and lanes as required.
We have 2 front mounted snow plows on tandem trucks, 6 underbody plows, 6 sanding/salting units, 1 front end loader, 4 backhoes, 1 bobcat with snow blade for sidewalk clearing. We keep approximately 300 t of salt in stock, and sand is readily available through our aggregate supplier.
