H.U. Knight: The Artist With a Camera - The Majesty of Masses

The Majesty of Masses

The Majesty of Masses. Pacific Grain Silos, ca. 1920s. CVA image M09980. In addition to his professional photography work, Knight also produced a number of prints as a photographic artist. These “camera sketches” have a textured and atmospheric quality to them due to Knight’s printing process, which typically involved a combination of paper, light, chemicals, and fabric filters to create these effects. The above photographs provide a glimpse of Knight’s creative process by showing the original negative, intermediary print, and final camera sketch in which he chose to reverse the image (from L to R)
