Signs of the Times
The City of Victoria Archives regularly displays photographs from its holdings in the main floor hallway of City Hall. Below is a digital version of the current display "Signs of the Times", which presents images of some of the large advertising billboards and other signage that was commonplace in Victoria until the early 1970s.
On August 10, 1972, Council passed an amendment to the 1963 sign bylaw (no. 5335). This amendment restricted the number, size, and content of commercial signage and resulted in the phasing out of all commercial billboards in Victoria over a three-year period.
These display images come from a series of photographs which were taken by the Engineering Department in May 1972. Additional photographs from this series (CR-0297) may be viewed via the Archives’ Online Search.
