New Works: A Cornucopia of Local Writers
City of Victoria Poet Laureate John Barton Celebrates New Works
To celebrate Victoria’s rich community of local writers, John Barton invited four authors – John Gould, Kathryn Mockler, Kyeren Regehr and Daniel G Scott – to read from their new works.

John Gould is the author The End of Me, a collection of fifty-six sudden stories released this year by Freehand Books, and of two previous collections in the same form, including Kilter, a finalist for the Giller Prize. He’s also written a novel, and published fiction in periodicals across Canada and abroad. He served on the editorial board of the Malahat Review; taught creative writing at the University of Victoria; created and coordinated writing programs for the BC Festival of the Arts and the Victoria School of Writing; and was a member of the collective that founded the Victoria Writers Festival.

Kathryn Mockler is a writer and experimental filmmaker. Her most recent books include Watch Your Head: Writers and Artists Respond to the Climate Crisis, (Coach House Books, 2020) and Me Then You Then Me Then (knife | fork | book, 2020), a chapbook written in collaboration with Gary Barwin. Her debut collection of stories is forthcoming from Book*hug in 2022. She is an assistant professor of screenwriting in the Department of Writing at the University of Victoria. Twitter: @themockler

Kyeren Regehr was born in Australia and lives on Vancouver Island. Her first collection of poetry, Cult Life (Pedlar Press), was listed by CBC as a Spring 2020 poetry book to watch out for. She has twice received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and has served on the poetry board of The Malahat Review. Her work has been published in literary journals and anthologies in Canada, Australia and the United States.

Daniel G. Scott is a retired academic and a poet with five volumes of poetry; [klee-shays] undone volume 1 (Nose in Book, 2020) is his fourth chapbook. This year will also see the release of Voicing Suicide, an anthology of suicide poems he has edited for Ekstasis Editions. Artistic director of Planet Earth Poetry since 2016, he is a father, grandfather and is becoming a gardener.
