Public Art Opportunities for Artists

Public art has the power to energize and enhance our public spaces, make us think, and transform where we live, work, and play. Public art can be several stories high or bring attention to the pavement beneath our feet. It can inspire conversation and help calm our hurried lifestyles. It can also be controversial.

The City of Victoria Public Art Program offers a variety of art opportunities for local, national and international artists, from emerging to established professionals, and numerous ways to stay informed and in touch.

Current Opportunities

Summer Banner Design Competition Call to Artists

The City of Victoria invites artists and graphic designers from the Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands, to submit their designs for banners to be installed in the downtown area of Victoria in the summers of 2019 and 2020.  Artists may submit up to five designs to the juried one-stage competition.

Eligibility: This competition is open to artists and graphic designers who are residents of the Capital Regional District, including the Gulf Islands.

Artist Fee: The successful artist or designer will receive an honorarium of $1,500 CAD.

Deadline for Submissions: 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.

Commute: A Bus Shelter-Based Art Exhibition

The City of Victoria invites artists, craftspeople and artisans from the Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands, to submit designs for bus shelter transit posters throughout the City of Victoria. Up to 18 artists will be selected for this exhibition. Their artwork will be shown on six bus shelters in three rounds, from June 2019 to May 2020.  Emerging, Indigenous and multicultural artists are encouraged to apply. Artists may submit up to five suitable existing artworks, or create new work for consideration.

Eligibility: This competition is open to artists, craftspeople and artisans who are residents of the Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands.

Artist Fee: $500 CAD per image (artists may submit up to five artworks).

Deadline for Submission: 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2019

Commercial Alley Outdoor Art Gallery Exhibition

The City of Victoria invites expressions of interest from emerging and establishing artists from the Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands to submit designs for display in the Commercial Alley Art Gallery. The artist selected to present work in the Alley will be contracted from April 2019 to August 2020. The gallery allows for four 1.2 metre x 2.4 metre plywood panels, provided by the City of Victoria, to be displayed year-round. The chosen artist can cut and reshape the panels within structural limitations.

Eligibility: This competition is open to artists and artist teams who are residents of the Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands.

Artist Fee: $2,250 CAD and a shipping stipend of up to $250.

Deadline for Submissions: 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2019.
