Public Art Opportunities

Public Art Opportunities for Artists

Public art has the power to energize and enhance our public spaces, make us think, and transform where we live, work, and play. Public art can be several stories high or bring attention to the pavement beneath our feet. It can inspire conversation and help calm our hurried lifestyles. It can also be controversial.

The City of Victoria Public Art Program offers a variety of art opportunities for local, national and international artists, from emerging to established professionals, and numerous ways to stay informed and in touch.

Be sure to read each Call to Artists carefully for eligibility criteria and submission requirements.

Current Opportunities

Call to Artists: Signage Kiosk

Building off the successful Commute bus-shelter display program, the City is seeking artist submissions to animate 10 Signage Kiosks within the downtown core. This project will help beautify public spaces and provide more temporary exhibition opportunities for artists of all media. Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) artists are encouraged to apply. Artists may submit up to two digital images/files (one for each style of kiosk). The artwork needs to fit well within the sizing of the kiosks, and artists must submit images following the instructions outlined below. Sizing specs are listed within the ‘Site Consideration’ section.

There will be up to 20 artworks selected and showcased over two display periods: August 2020– October 2020 and November 2020 – January 2021.

Compensation: $500 CAD per image selected

Deadline for Submissions: July 21, 2020 at 4 p.m. PST

Call to Artists: Storefronts Victoria

In 2019, the City of Victoria identified several vacant commercial spaces that have gone unoccupied in the downtown core. For our first animation of the spaces we asked local artists to install site specific artworks – this included textile art, time-based works and mixed media installations.

For the second round of Storefronts, the City is looking for local emerging and established designers and illustrators to temporarily animate vacant storefronts with vinyl wraps for the windows. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to allow artists to access the spaces for a site-specific installation.

Artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Colour are encouraged to apply. Selected works will be divided into two display periods running from August 2020 through to January 2021.

Compensation: $500 CAD per image selected

Deadline for Submissions: July 21, 2020 at 4 p.m. PST
