How We Got Here

Constructed in 1971, Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre is one of a kind. No other facility in the City of Victoria offers the same access to affordable health, fitness, social and well-being programs.

As one of Victoria’s oldest and most frequently used recreation facilities, the building now requires significant investment to meet current building, system and accessibility standards.

In 2016/17 the City conducted a feasibility study, gathering public input on the current and future community need, as well as developing potential facility options. Council directed staff to develop a plan for a new facility, approving a budget of $69.4 million. The City has received citizen input regarding community needs and the future of this critical recreation facility. This feedback was instrumental in the establishment of guiding principles for the project, as well as the development of conceptual designs. Progress has been made on both the design and funding for the new all ages and abilities community centre. Over the past several months significant effort has been focused on engaging citizens, stakeholder groups, technical experts, and other partners to refine the designs for the new centre.

Five key principles emerged through community feedback and have guided the design of the new facility:

     1. Barrier-Free
     2. Inclusive (all ages, abilities and families)
     3. Efficient and Sustainable
     4. High-Quality Health and Wellness
     5. Place for Community

The City continues to hear feedback, offering formal engagement on the design from February - June 2018. The goal is to produce a barrier-free, inclusive, high-quality recreation centre for the citizens of Victoria.
