Water Main Flushing Program
Each year, Victoria's water mains are flushed to remove sediment and maintain high quality drinking water. Residents will be advised when water main flushing is due to occur in their area.
Spring 2021 Water Main Flushing
As part of our ongoing program to provide high quality water to the City of Victoria, the Public Works Division will be conducting its annual Water Main Flushing program.
This program is intended to clean water distribution pipes of sediments that build up over time and improve water quality. This is accomplished by flushing fire hydrants to force water at high velocities through the system. The flushing program is conducted once in the spring (January to end of May) and the fall (September to end of November).
This work will be conducted during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and occasional evenings to avoid impacting businesses and traffic flow. Weather permitting, the City of Victoria will begin water main flushing in Esquimalt and Vic West on Tuesday, January 26, 2021.
As a result of the flushing process, you may temporarily experience low water pressure and your water may become discoloured during or after flushing. The discoloured water is not a hazard to health. If you experience discoloured water, please run the cold water tap in your bathtub or laundry tub to avoid clogging screens in faucets.
Commercial establishments such as laundromats, beauty salons, breweries, hotels, restaurants, etc. are invited to contact Public Works at 250.361.0400 for further details and to receive advance warning of flushing dates in their specific location.
