Call for Victoria's First Youth Poet Laureate (November 7 Deadline)

Calling all poets and spoken word artists! The City of Victoria Youth Council is hosting a call for Victoria's first Youth Poet Laureate.

This unique leadership opportunity will allow a local youth to use his/her creativity to be a leader in the community, share poetry with the people of Victoria, and lead a project of choice to engage other youth through poetry.

The Youth Poet Laureate will perform their work at select City of Victoria events including City Council and Youth Council meetings.  With the support of a poet mentor and the City of Victoria Youth Council, the Youth Poet Laureate will develop and complete a project that engages youth through poetry.

The Youth Poet Laureate will receive a $1,500 honorarium, $1,000 of project funding, and a year-long mentorship during the term from January 2013 - December 2013. The mentor will be Victoria's 2012 Poetry Slam Champion Jeremy Loveday.
Youth 21 and under are encouraged to apply.
How to Apply
To apply, please submit the following:

1. Three original poems (no more, no less) in any format (typed, audio, video, etc).  If you are submitting audio or video, please include a transcription of the poems you submit.

2. A letter of intent including an outline of your vision for the Youth Poet Laureate position and three sample ideas  of projects that you would be interested in undertaking as Youth Poet Laureate.  If you are chosen for the position, you will have the freedom to change your project ideas or brainstorm a new project with your mentor or peers.

3. A résumé outlining your community engagement experience (related school, work, or volunteer experience).

Finalists for the Youth Poet Laureate position will be invited for an interview with the selection panel.  Interviews will be conducted during the last two weeks of November.  All applicants will be contacted whether or not they are chosen as finalists.
