Big Square Welcomes New "Little Library"

A new Little Library offering a free community book exchange is now installed in Centennial Square. The library is designed to help foster the love of reading. The community is invited “to take a book, leave a book”.

The Little Library in the Square has been stocked by City staff and Council with a range of reading materials for all ages. It will initially be located next to a lamppost fronting Spirit Stage, day and night, and weather permitting.

“Little free libraries,” also known as book boxes, offer free books in small containers for the enjoyment of the public. A worldwide movement, “little free libraries” promote literacy and provide a gathering place for the community to share their favourite literature and stories.

Although there is a number of neighbourhood-driven book boxes in Victoria, this is the first City-initiated “little free library.”

Constructed out of two re-purposed electrical boxes and refurbished with shelves, the Little Library features a unique wrap design depicting a wooden cabinet stocked with antique novels. It opens from both sides and is set on wheels, making it easy to position in various areas of the Square to complement public events.
