Join the Eastside Conversation on Sites for Sewage Treatment May 30 and 31

On May 12, 2015 the Eastside Select Committee, which includes the City of Victoria, the District of Oak Bay and the District of Saanich, presented a long list of potential wastewater treatment sites that are “technically feasible”.

Each municipality has brought forward potential sites as part of a comprehensive public engagement process that will end with selection of a site or sites early this summer where a wastewater treatment plant or plants will be built.

Some sites are privately held or held by institutions, which the CRD or municipalities have no control over. These sites are not individually identified but are represented within a general zone within which a number of sites are located.

“Each municipality has shown leadership by bringing forward these sites,” said Lisa Helps, Chair of the Eastside Select Committee. “The decision around siting is an exciting opportunity for elected officials, technical folks and the public to work together so no one is making decisions in a bubble,” said Helps. “We’re revealing the technically feasible sites before we’ve made any decisions so the public can help us by bringing their values, criteria and desired outcomes into a meaningful conversation.”

Eastside Technically Feasible Sites for Wastewater Treatment

Public Input

The next step is to engage the community to explore and examine the potential sites, and to use public priorities and emerging technical, social, economic and environmental considerations as filters to help narrow down the number of sites.

These conversations will be held in public with the public so that decision-making can be done in a rational and transparent manner.

The community is invited to roll up their sleeves at siting and technical charettes that will be taking place on:

Saturday, May 30 at 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
University of Victoria
Cadboro Commons Building

Sunday, May 31 at 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Victoria Conference Centre

These interactive sessions are an opportunity to learn more and provide input into the site selection and technology selection process. More detailed information on the sites will be made available by the CRD the week of May 18.

About the Eastside Select Committee

The Eastside Select Committee is an official sub-committee of the Capital Regional District. The participants (Oak Bay, Saanich and Victoria) are working to identify solutions for wastewater treatment and resource recovery that meet the unique needs of the eastside in a proactive and timely way. The Eastside Select Committee will develop a plan for the eastside that, in combination with the plan from the Westside Select Committee, could form the basis for an amendment to the Core Area Liquid Waste Management Plan (CALWMP).
