March 2, 2018

This week, City of Victoria Emergency Management staff and the Victoria Ready Emergency Social Services Volunteer Team were recognized by Emergency Management BC for their assistance during last summer’s wildfires and flooding.
Plaques were presented to the City and Victoria Ready volunteers, and a certificate of recognition was issued to Tanya Patterson, the City’s Emergency Program Coordinator, for her work in emergency operations at the Regional District of Central Okanagan, assisting with the floods and wildfires.
The City's Deputy Emergency Program Specialist Jowett Wong worked in the Emergency Operations Centre with Emergency Social Services (ESS) at the Okanagan Indian Band, assisting with the flooding emergency response.
During the summer, the Victoria Ready ESS volunteer team assisted evacuees displaced from wildfires in British Columbia.
A provincial state of emergency was declared on July 7, 2017. It was extended four times over a nine-week period. Approximately 65,000 people were evacuated from their homes.
