Info Session: Be Tsunami Smart

In British Columbia, Tsunami Preparedness Week is recognized annually the second full week of April. The City of Victoria invites you to attend the FREE Be Tsunami Smart Information Session on Monday, April 9 to kick off Tsunami Preparedness Week.

Although tsunamis are rare, it’s important to understand what a tsunami is, the impact of a tsunami on Victoria, and what to do in the event of a tsunami warning.

Alison Bird, Earthquake Seismologist, Geological Survey of Canada
Alison Bird has over 20 years’ experience studying geoscience hazards. Learn what to expect from earthquakes in the Capital Region, how to prepare for them, and how they can trigger a tsunami.

6:50 p.m. – 7:20 p.m.:  Tsunamis 101
Dr. Tania L. Insua, PhD, Ocean Analytics Program Manager
Ocean Networks Canada
Dr. Insua will walk you through “Tsunamis 101” to learn the basics of tsunami science, how they are detected, measured, and modelled for the Capital Region, and what you can do to be prepared for one.
