Apply for up to $50,000 to Improve Life for Youth In Victoria

The Participatory Budget Steering Committee is inviting proposals for how to invest $52,000 in youth in the City of Victoria.  Any community member or organization with an idea for a project or activity that will benefit or be enjoyed by youth, can apply online at by April 30, 2019.

Participatory Budgeting is an innovative, democratic process that gives the entire community the opportunity to participate and decide how to invest a portion of the City budget.

The Participatory Budgeting Steering Committee is made of up 11 community volunteers and one City staff liaison.  They have been designing the community process this year that is outlined in the Participatory Budgeting Rulebook.

Now is the time for proposals to be submitted.  Any resident with an idea to improve the lives of youth in Victoria can submit a proposal for up to $50,000.  An additional $2,000 of micro PB funding has been earmarked for youth-led projects requesting up to $500.

After they are vetted against the following basic criteria, community voting will determine the top projects for funding:

  • Projects must be within the City of Victoria and must benefit youth
  • Construction or commencement of the participatory projects must occur within 12 months of the funding decision
  • Projects can be put forward by individuals, groups, or non-profits organizations
  • Private businesses cannot put forward a project, but can sponsor one by providing additional funds
  • Projects cannot cancel or delay projects already planned or underway by the City of Victoria or other community groups

Proposals could include art installations, park play features, youth events or anything else designed to benefit youth in Victoria.

The Steering Committee is hosting two events to help individuals and organizations learn about Participatory Budgeting, generate ideas and help build effective proposals.
