Happy Holidays from the City of Victoria

Victoria’s seasonal baskets are assembled by the City’s nursery staff and add festive cheer downtown. Here’s how to make your own version at home.

Make Your Own Seasonal Basket

Start with a 12 to 16-inch circular frame with a hanging hook, or you can re-use an empty hanging basket. City staff reuse the summer hanging baskets, keeping the soil/root mass intact.

Gather a variety of evergreen boughs, such as cedar, pine and fir. These can be sourced during pruning or purchased from local garden centres.

Thank you for not harvesting from live trees in parks.

Slip cut ends of boughs into the frame, allowing the greenery to hang down. If needed, secure with gardening twine or wire.

If reusing a hanging basket with the soil/root mass intact, pierce the stems through the root mass from below and above. If reusing an empty basket, attach boughs to the frame.

Continue attaching boughs until the hardware is covered. City baskets have a circular wreath that runs around the top of the wire basket to hide hardware and fill in gaps.

Tip: Reverse some foliage to show the colour differences on the underside of needles/leaves, adding interest and depth to your basket.

Decorate with ribbons, bows, pine cones, and other festive ornaments.

Hang your basket outside your home and enjoy all season. If the basket is under an eave, a light watering now and then will help extend the life of the greens.

From all of us at the City of Victoria, wishing you and yours a safe and happy holiday!
