NOW RECRUITING: International Decade for People of African Descent Advisory Committee
July 9, 2021
The City of Victoria is recruiting up to nine people of African descent to be part of its new advisory committee in its commitment to acknowledge and recognize the International Decade for People of African Decent 2015 – 2024.
The new advisory committee will engage the community to develop a three-year action plan to implement the United Nations’ proclamation of promoting respect, protection and fulfillment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms of people of African descent, as recognized in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights.
The advisory committee will be comprised of three elder members who self-identify and represent the wisdom of Black communities, three youth members between the ages of 18 to 29, and three members that represent Black lead organizations and business.
Applicants should have knowledge or previous experience in racial equity and/or anti-discrimination work or a strong commitment to learn and contribute to this work. Together, advisory committee members will represent a range of interests of the Black community such as art and sports, justice and community safety, education, inclusion and immigration, access to affordable housing, mental/physical health and civic engagement.
The three-year action plan will identify actions for the City to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Black Victorians, promote equitable outcomes on issues relating to racial profiling and eliminating institutionalized stereotypes of people of African descent, and support housing, employment and entrepreneurship initiatives.
In addition, the advisory committee will identify best practices for raising awareness in the community about the heritage and culture of people of African descent, advise Council on emerging issues and trends of significance to Black communities, and look at how to ensure the interests and needs of Black communities are reflected in City programs and services.
Advisory committee members will receive an honorarium and serve a three-year term to the end of 2024.
