Statement from Mayor Helps on Announcement of Historic Child Care Agreement for B.C.

On behalf of the City of Victoria, Mayor Lisa Helps has issued the following statement regarding the first early learning and child care agreement announced today by Premier John Horgan and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau:

“Today’s announcement of a Canada-wide, community-based system of quality early learning and child care resulting in tens of thousands of new spaces over the next seven years, marks a truly historic investment in childcare that will have exponential benefits for families across B.C. and right here in Victoria.

“We know that parents in Victoria are struggling to find affordable childcare near their homes or workplaces and are often challenged to find any available childcare spaces period. Having our federal and provincial governments leading the charge to ensure this gap is closed is key to a strong economy, key to the participation of parents – especially women – in the workforce and key to our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Last fall, City staff released a child care report revealing a gap of more than 2,800 spaces for children aged five and under. We are thrilled to know that parents will be able to find quality spaces for their children for close to half the current cost. Congratulations to all who have worked for so long to bring forward this much needed change.”
