As Victoria continues to grow and change, the City is working hard to maintain and upgrade our roads and infrastructure to work better for everyone. The tools on this page will help you understand how City streets may be changing and plan around major construction projects.
Road Construction & Closures
Construction work is an essential part of a thriving city – but travelling through work zones requires extra caution to keep yourself and others safe. No matter how you get around, please be considerate of workers and other road users by being patient, using caution and following the directions of signage and crews.
Current large-scale construction projects in Victoria are displayed below on VicMap, the City’s online mapping tool. Please note that this map does not show every construction project in the City. You can also follow @CityofVictoria on Twitter for regular traffic advisories.
Every year, the City identifies opportunities across Victoria to improve safety, accessibility and comfort for all road users. Residents and businesses will be notified by mail when large-scale transportation projects are planned nearby, such as:
road paving
traffic calming
crosswalks
sidewalks
new traffic signals
bike or bus lanes
Major transportation projects planned for 2024 are listed below. To stay up-to-date on upcoming transportation projects in Victoria, sign up for our Go Victoria newsletter.

Bike lanes will be installed or upgrades along the corridor, and the right-turn slip lane at Quadra Street will be converted to a new public plaza. Plans for this corridor were developed with input from the 2024-25 Street Upgrades engagement process, where residents expressed high levels of support for pedestrian safety improvements (especially the removal of slip lanes), protected bike lanes, better public spaces and other changes to prioritize safety over on-street parking.
Work is expected to be complete in late fall 2024.

This summer/fall, one-way protected bike lanes are being installed on each side of Shelbourne Street from Haultain Street to North Dairy Road. As part of the City's approved cycling network plan since 2014, this project will close a major gap in a regional north-south bike route and give people in Victoria safer and more convenient options to connect to and from Saanich. This project will pave the way for larger-scale upgrades that are planned along Shelbourne Street following significant underground work in the next several years.
Work is expected to be complete in late fall 2024.
