This summer, Victoria’s Artist in Residence Kemi Craig is collecting gestures from the community that she will incorporate into a free, public dance performance exploring how we bring our internal worlds to our external experiences this fall.

Kemi invites you to share a gesture or common movement from your life that is part of how you strive towards safety, perfection, adaptation, fitting in or making yourself or others more comfortable.

Think about common movements that may be so intrinsic you don’t think before you do them. This could be: facing the door in an elevator, moving to the right to make room for someone coming from the opposite direction, lifting your umbrella up so it doesn’t bump another umbrella or covering your mouth when you smile.

Please submit a brief description of the movement or gesture to culture@victoria.ca before August 15. Describe both the context (i.e. where are you, who, if anyone, are you with) as well as the movement you perform.
