VICTORIA, B.C. — The City of Victoria will replace the roof on the Gate of Harmonious Interest this fall, using high-quality materials to extend the life of the iconic Chinatown landmark for generations. The project will maintain all original design elements to preserve the structure’s historical integrity.
Originally constructed in 1981, the gate has stood as a symbol of cultural unity and historical significance. This fall, the City will begin replacing the gate’s three roofs with weather-resistant terra cotta tiles and figurines. The project also includes a new programmable sound system and lighting improvements, ensuring the gate remains a vibrant and safe feature of downtown Victoria.
“The Gate of Harmonious Interest is more than a structure — it’s a symbol of our shared history and the enduring contributions of Victoria’s Chinese community,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “This project reflects our commitment to preserving cultural heritage while investing in the future of our city.”
Construction is scheduled to begin in October and is expected to be completed by early February 2026, in time for Chinese New Year celebrations. The City is working closely with local stakeholders to minimize disruptions by installing a scaffold structure around the gate during construction to reduce traffic, noise and pedestrian impacts.
“The gate is a cherished part of Chinatown’s identity,” said Thomas Chan, president of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. “This restoration honours our past while ensuring the gate continues to welcome visitors and residents alike with pride and beauty.”
The structure follows the Chinese tradition of erecting gates to commemorate important places or events and includes inscriptions that celebrate the partnership between the Chinese and non-Chinese communities.
