Death Cap Mushrooms: What You Need to Know

Extremely toxic death cap mushrooms have been observed in Greater Victoria in the fall and occasionally in the summer. These mushrooms are extremely poisonous to pets and people.  

What you need to know:  

  • If you are uncertain, do not eat wild mushrooms. Death cap mushrooms can be confused with some edible mushrooms.  
  • Report any suspected death cap mushrooms in parks or boulevards to the City of Victoria (parks@victoria.ca) and the provincial invasive species portal.    
  • The City does not manage infestations on private property. If you suspect you have found death cap mushrooms on private property, please report to the provincial invasive species portal.  For other information, including proper handling and disposal procedures, please refer to the links below.
