VICTORIA, B.C. — The City of Victoria has awarded nearly $1 million from the Community Housing Renewal Grant program to fund seven local projects that preserve and enhance non-market housing across Victoria.
“Affordable, high-quality housing is a cornerstone of community wellbeing,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “This vital investment is a fast, cost-effective way to help extend the life of existing community housing in Victoria while also improving everyday quality of life for residents.”
Grants will support a wide range of projects including structural repairs, heating and cooling system upgrades and flood prevention measures in existing buildings that provide homes to low-income residents, including families, seniors, people with disabilities, newcomers and immigrants.
The City’s innovative grant program leverages funding from the Government of Canada’s Housing Accelerator Fund to respond to the growing need for affordable homes.
“As a small housing co-operative, this grant will allow us to improve the energy efficiency and climate readiness of our homes while strengthening our ability to provide safe, comfortable and affordable housing for current and future residents,” said Debra Sheets, board member of Superior Street Housing Co-operative, a grant recipient.
The program is part of delivering the Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan and the Housing Strategy by increasing use and availability of existing non-market housing. Investments in existing affordable housing preserves scarce affordable units, improves living conditions for vulnerable residents and delivers a cost-effective way to maintain and expand housing stability in the community.
The funding opportunity was open to non-government, non-profit owners or operators of existing non-market, multi-unit buildings at least 20 years old located in the City of Victoria.
Recipients have until Oct. 15, 2027, to complete their projects.
