Charge into Fire Safety™: Charging is a Superpower is the theme for Fire Prevention Week 2026 (Oct. 4-10), highlighting ways to reduce the risk of battery fires.
Many devices we use regularly, like cellphones, laptops, power tools and cordless vacuum cleaners, use lithium-ion batteries. While these devices are safe when handled and charged properly, they can overheat, catch fire or explode if overcharged or damaged.
So far in 2026, seven reported fires in Victoria have been linked to batteries that were charging, short-circuited or had been tampered with. By following everyday safe charging habits, we can help reduce the risk of battery fires, protecting our homes and families.
Help reduce the risk of battery fires with these tips:
- Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table, desk or bare floor.
- Do not block exits when charging larger items, such as e-bikes, scooters and power tools.
- Stop using a device if it becomes very hot, swells, leaks, smokes, smells unusual or makes popping or hissing sounds.
- Unplug devices once fully charged.
- Never throw out batteries, chargers or battery-powered devices in regular trash or recycling bins.
- Responsibly dispose of batteries at a safe battery recycling location. Visit recycleyourbatteries.ca to find a recycling location.
During Fire Prevention Week and throughout the school year, the Victoria Fire Department will be visiting local elementary schools to talk about fire safety.
