Construction starts this week on major transportation improvements in James Bay. Road safety upgrades include a combination of protected and painted bike lanes and traffic calming on Superior, Montreal and Government Streets. The project also includes 835 metres of road paving, upgraded crossings at 15 intersections, an EV fast-charging station, a community-designed berry garden and a new traffic signal at the intersection of Belleville and Menzies Streets.

More than 1,300 residents participated in a two-phased engagement process in 2021 which informed the design’s focus on improved connectivity for people walking, rolling and cycling, as well as street renewal and clean transportation options.

Funding for the project includes support from the Canada Community Building Fund, the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia and the Province of BC through the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation.

Statistics Canada data from the 2021 Census indicates more people are using active transportation, a trend that will likely continue as the City’s AAA cycling network expands. Later this year, AAA cycling routes will also be built on Fort Street and Gorge Road.

All efforts will be made to minimize impacts to residents, visitors, businesses, commuters and special events while maintaining worksite safety for crews and the public. Anyone traveling through the neighbourhood is advised to allow extra time and follow direction of signs and crews.
