VICTORIA, B.C. — To mark Economic Development Week in B.C. (May 10-16), the City of Victoria is highlighting new actions underway to make it easier to start, operate and grow a business in Victoria.
Over the past year, the City has worked closely with business owners, advisors and partners to better understand where processes can be clearer, faster and more responsive. That feedback is now shaping practical changes across City services.
“Local businesses are essential to Victoria’s economy and to the wellbeing and vitality of our neighbourhoods,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “By listening to the business community, we’re removing barriers and making City services work better for businesses.”
Key initiatives launched or underway in 2026 include:
- Business Experience Survey – A new tool for businesses to share feedback on City processes, approvals and services to help identify systemic issues and guide future improvements.
- Business Licence Process Review – The City’s recent review of the business licensing process has resulted in plans to simplify applications and reduce wait times, with several improvements already underway to create a faster, more user-friendly experience.
- Economic health reporting – New quarterly reports with up‑to‑date insights on business trends, licensing activity and economic conditions to support informed decision‑making.
- Industry and community collaboration – Ongoing engagement with businesses and partners, including commercial leasing agents, community safety partners and post‑secondary institutions, is helping identify emerging needs and shape City supports. This includes a partnership with the University of Victoria to support entrepreneurship.
The City also hosted a Safety for Business information session in April, focused on practical tips, community safety updates and connections between business owners and City staff. A Business Information Session on childcare will be held later this spring to support employers and operators navigating childcare‑related regulations, opportunities and partnerships.
Business owners are encouraged to participate in the Business Experience Survey and explore available resources and business focused events through the City’s Business Hub.
