Latest News

With high tides and heavy winds underway and in the forecast until late Wednesday, please exercise caution when travelling near the coastline. Staff have closed beach access to Gonzales Park, the lower pathway at Ross Bay beach and the shoreline pathway at Holland Point.  Please follow posted signage and do not enter closed areas.

A wind warning is in effect with gusts up to 100 km/h expected, which could result in falling tree branches and local power outages. City crews are actively clearing streets and storm drains of leaves and debris to ensure rainwater flows properly. Emergency teams are on standby to address fallen trees, branches, and other storm-related hazards. Public Works is closely monitoring weather conditions to respond quickly to flooding or blocked drains. Here’s what you can do to prepare.

Strong Winds
Prepare for strong winds and help keep your neighbourhood safe with the following tips:
•    Trim dead or damaged tree branches to prevent them from falling during a storm. Avoid parking vehicles under trees or hydro wires during stormy weather.
•    Secure loose items around your home such as garbage cans, patio furniture, retractable canopies, ladders, hoarding, building materials, banners and awnings.
•    Be prepared for power outages. Make sure to charge your cell phone and have flashlights, blankets, a portable radio and spare batteries on hand.

Know your emergency contact numbers
•    Downed power line – call 911.
•    Power outage – call BC Hydro at 1.888.POWERON / 1.888.769.3766. View BC Hydro's information on power outages.
•    Fallen branches or trees – call the City’s Parks department at 250.361.0600. If calling on weekends, or weekdays before 8 a.m. or after 4 p.m., call 250.361.0400.

Prepare Your Emergency Kits
During wet, windier months, power outages due to fallen trees or high winds are more likely. Residents should be prepared and have their emergency kits ready. For information on what to include in your emergency kits, go to VictoriaReady.ca.
