VICTORIA, B.C. — Construction is underway on the next phase of multi-modal street upgrades in Victoria. We're making improvements to two major corridors: Blanshard Street (Caledonia Avenue to Kings Road) and Cook Street (Bay Street to Maplewood Road).

These improvements will enhance safety and comfort for all road users while advancing the City’s long-term transportation vision outlined in Go Victoria and the Official Community Plan. The project also supports the City’s 2023-2026 Strategic Plan by expanding the AAA bike and roll network, improving safety and creating a better travel experience for everyone.

“Improving safety and accessibility is one of the most important investments we can make to support community wellbeing,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “These upgrades will create more comfortable options for everyone while maintaining our roads and helping us build a safer and more reliable transportation network.”

Upgrades will vary by corridor but will include:
•    Road paving and intersection safety improvements
•    New protected bike lanes
•    Accessibility enhancements
•    New and upgraded pedestrian crossings
•    A new traffic signal at Blanshard and Pembroke Street

Blanshard and Cook Streets are among Victoria’s busiest corridors and have some of the highest collision rates in the City. These changes will help move Victoria toward its goal of eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries, while creating safer, more comfortable streets for people walking, biking, rolling and driving.

“By investing in accessible streets for everyone in the City of Victoria, our government is helping make it safer and easier for people to get where they need to go,” said Grace Lore, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill. “These upgrades along Blanshard and Cook Street reflect our shared goals to improve community connections, with safe, active transportation and road options for all, across the City.”

Construction began in early 2026 and will continue through the year. Expect temporary lane closures, detours and parking restrictions during construction. Visit victoria.ca/majorprojects for more information. Subscribe to email construction up dates for these projects at victoria.ca/signup.

This project received funding support from the B.C. Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program.
