Downtown Victoria just got more colourful. Illustrator and mural artist Carolyn Wong has transformed the south wall at 1713 Government Street into a captivating visual experience.
The new mural reflects the cultural heritage of Chinatown and shares the history and traditions of the Tam Kung Temple, the oldest Chinese temple in Canada, which is housed in the building. It also includes an augmented reality feature by Mark Illing that highlights artifacts from inside the temple. The project is a joint initiative between the City of Victoria and the Yen Wo Society.
The mural is made possible with funding from the OUR DWTN revitalization fund, as well as contributions from the Downtown Victoria Business Association and Sunbelt Rentals. OUR DWTN is a new, annual program that re-invests revenue from recently expanded parking fees in programming, beautification, maintenance and safety in the downtown core.
