The City of Victoria is marking Public Works Week by recognizing the people and services that support daily life in the city, often behind the scenes.

Public works staff plan, build, maintain and operate infrastructure that supports transportation, waste collection, sewer systems, stormwater management and emergency response.

“Public works plays a vital role in keeping the city functioning safely and reliably,” said William Doyle, Director of Engineering and Public Works. “This week is an opportunity to recognize the skilled employees whose work supports residents every day.”

Public Works Week is recognized across North America each May, and this year’s theme, Rooted in Service, Powered by Community, emphasizes the unity between this vital work and the people who rely on it.

To celebrate the theme, the City invited local students to take part in a Public Works Week T‑shirt design contest, with the selected design appearing on shirts worn by Victoria public works staff.

The City is also releasing its fifth set of limited-edition Meet the Fleet trading cards. This annual series of collectible trading cards highlight the unique and essential vehicles that power public works activities.

“Meet the Fleet helps share the story of public works in a way that’s fun, accessible and meaningful for families,” said Gavin Humphrey, Assistant Director of Public Works. “It’s a simple way to show pride in the work our teams do.”
