Most of Victoria is safe from tsunamis, and even if you’re in the tsunami hazard zone, safety is usually a block or two away.
Knowing the hazard zone helps you respond quickly and safely, preventing chaos during an emergency.
During Tsunami Preparedness Week, which runs April 13 to 19, 2025, visit victoriaready.ca to:

- Sign up for a free emergency preparedness workshop
- Subscribe to Vic-Alert – the City’s free emergency notifications, straight to your phone or email
The main risk of tsunamis in Victoria is from a local earthquake strong enough to make standing difficult. Do NOT wait for a warning to evacuate the tsunami hazard zone after an earthquake.
If you feel strong shaking from an earthquake that makes it difficult to stand:
- drop, cover and hold on
- count to 60 after shaking stops
- leave the tsunami hazard zone by foot or bike to keep roads clear for first responders
- if you are outside the tsunami hazard zone, stay where you are
- stay tuned for updates and instructions from the City of Victoria on radio, TV and trusted media sources
The Province’s emergency alerting system automatically sends tsunami warnings to your phone, T.V. and radio without needing to subscribe. Vic-Alert will be used for follow-up to give specific local instructions and information.
