A new playground is open in Stadacona Park, offering a fun and accessible play experience for kids of all ages and abilities. The City of Victoria hosted a community event on Saturday to celebrate the new playground as a place for families, caregivers and children to gather and form connections that strengthen a sense of community.

“There’s excitement and anticipation about this amazing new accessible playground,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “This playground is a celebration of fun for kids of all ages and abilities. We're not just building play structures; together we are building an inclusive, compassionate, welcoming community for everyone."

The bright, colourful playground is unique to Stadacona Park and was designed with community input to spark imagination and encourage creative play within a lush greenspace with mature trees and garden beds. Designed with accessibility in mind, the new playground offers a range of low barrier play features for children of all ages and abilities.

The new playground features a tall tower with slides and climbers, swings, an in-ground trampoline, spinners and springers. Accessible play elements include a ride-on wheelchair swing, a disc swing, a chair swing and a chair spinner. The entire playground area also has an accessible rubberized play surface. A gently sloping mound within the play area provides an accessible route to the lower landing in the tower, which features activity panels and a small slide.

This central location is next to sport courts and a public washroom, as well as access to the City’s cycling network and public transit. An accessible parking space was added nearby on Stadacona Avenue as part of the project.

With the removal of the former playground, staff are now working on the restoration of the natural areas in the park by planting native trees, shrubs and flowers to support local biodiversity.
